Gaurav’s Inspiring Visit to Batadrava Before Leading APCC: A New Era Begins
Guwahati: Gaurav Gogoi, the newly appointed chief of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC), arrived in Guwahati on Monday evening to take up his position, succeeding outgoing president Bhupen Kumar Borah. Earlier that day, he visited the revered Batadrava Than in Nagaon, the birthplace of the notable neo-Vaishnavite saint and social reformer, Srimanta Sankardeva, before heading to Guwahati to officially assume his role on Tuesday morning.
At Batadrava Than, Gogoi highlighted the message of harmony and unity promoted by Sankardeva, stating, “We are resolved to march ahead in this path shown by him. Our efforts will be to take his ideology to the people in nooks and corners of Assam and India.”
However, Gogoi’s journey from upper Assam through central Assam’s Nagaon to Morigaon was marred by disruptions, with municipal authorities confiscating Congress banners and hoardings erected to welcome him, citing the lack of authorization for their installation.
On Tuesday morning, Gogoi is scheduled to visit the Kamakhya temple before officially taking charge as the PCC president at the Congress headquarters in Rajiv Bhawan. He expressed confidence in grassroots Congress workers and emphasized the party’s collective leadership, stating decisions regarding alliances for the 2026 assembly elections will be made in consultation with both grassroots members and senior leaders. “Unless we strengthen our party, we cannot be a good ally. To be a strong ally, we first need to enhance our own strength. We also need to seek public opinion on issues they want the alliance to address,” Gogoi added.
He further asserted that the Congress party plans to expose corruption within the BJP-led government. In a related incident, the Nagaon Municipal Board and the Guwahati Municipal Corporation removed Congress banners on Monday morning, just as party workers were preparing to extend a grand welcome to the new PCC chief.
Gogoi’s appointment as Assam PCC chief is significant as the state approaches its assembly elections early next year. His ascension to this crucial role comes amidst ongoing attacks from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has been linking Gogoi’s British wife’s alleged ties to Pakistan’s ISI to undermine him.
