Kanniyakumari District Collector R. Alagumeena officially released water from the Pechiparai dam on Sunday to support irrigation for local agricultural lands. This initiative aims to benefit the extensive farming area within the command zones of the Kodhayar and Pattinamkal canals in the district.

During the release ceremony, Collector Alagumeena announced that water will flow from the Pechiparai dam from June 1 until February 28, 2026. This provision is crucial for irrigating approximately 79,000 acres of farmland spread across six taluks in Kanniyakumari. She specified that the discharge rate will be maintained at 850 cusecs, with adjustments made based on demand and the dam’s water availability.

The agricultural landscape in the region is diverse, with around 16,000 acres dedicated to paddy cultivation, 15,000 acres growing bananas, and 50,000 acres focused on coconut production. In addition, the Thovalai canal irrigates 12,868 acres, while the Padmanabhapuram Puthanar canal provides water to 19,711 acres and the Ananthanar canal services 10,457 acres. An impressive total of 64,000 acres are also irrigated through various other canals, including the Nanjil Nadu Puthanar Canal and Pazhayar canal.

The event also saw the participation of local representatives, including Killiyoor constituency MLA S. Rajesh Kumar, along with officials from the Public Works Department. Their collective efforts aim to enhance agricultural productivity, ensuring that farmers have the necessary water supply to sustain their livelihoods.

This strategic release underscores the commitment of local authorities to support the agriculture sector, especially during crucial growing seasons. By coordinating water management effectively, the district aims to optimize resources and ensure food security for the community.

As the season progresses, farmers in Kanniyakumari can look forward to improved irrigation, thanks to the concerted efforts and planning of the district administration. This initiative not only reflects the importance of effective water resource management but also highlights the vital role of collaboration among various governmental departments and local representatives in supporting rural agriculture.
