Teesta River Flooding Disrupts Travel Plans in North Sikkim’s Torrential Rain
In response to continuous overnight rainfall, the Teesta River has experienced a significant surge in water levels, reaching 2.5 meters above normal. This alarming rise has raised concerns among local authorities and led to immediate travel restrictions in the area. As a safety precaution, the district administration has halted the issuance of permits for North Sikkim as of Saturday. This decision comes in light of blocked routes and hazardous travel conditions. The main access road to Chungthang, an important transit hub for both tourists and residents, is obstructed at various points due to landslides and flooding.
An official statement from the district office announced, βIn view of safety concerns and inaccessibility, all permits previously granted for May 31, 2025, stand cancelled.β
Currently, rescue and recovery efforts are underway, with specialized teams actively searching for missing individuals and assisting affected residents. Authorities are urging both travelers and locals to exercise caution and cooperate with emergency services.
Weather forecasts suggest continued instability in the region, prompting officials to closely monitor the river’s flow and road conditions. Authorities plan to review the situation periodically to determine when travel access to North Sikkim can be safely resumed.
