Recently, employees at LinkedIn received unwelcome news as the company announced plans to lay off approximately 281 workers across California. This decision follows a troubling trend in the tech industry, where giants like Google, Microsoft, and IBM have already cut hundreds of jobs in recent months. LinkedIn, a Microsoft-owned professional networking platform, has informed the affected employees about the impending job cuts, which will specifically affect various locations in California, including 159 roles in Mountain View, 60 in San Francisco, 23 in Sunnyvale, 11 in Carpinteria, and 28 remote positions.
This move appears to be part of a larger strategy by Microsoft to reduce its overall workforce by about 6,000 jobs. Earlier this month, 122 Microsoft employees based in the Bay Area were also let go. Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft, highlighted that advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have enabled the company to automate as much as 30 percent of its code, which plays a significant role in these job reductions.
According to a WARN filing obtained by SF Gate, LinkedIn has seen substantial layoffs among its software engineering staff. In Mountain View, as many as 71 key software engineering positions have been eliminated, affecting both staff and senior-level roles. Notably, specialists in machine learning, DevOps, and systems infrastructure were not excluded from these layoffs, with some also experiencing job losses. The WARN filing also indicates that other roles such as desk strategists, product managers, and designers have been impacted by the cuts.
Details regarding the full extent of the layoffs remain sparse. LinkedIn’s headquarters is situated in Sunnyvale and Mountain View, with additional offices around the globe. So far, neither LinkedIn nor Microsoft has provided comments regarding the reasons behind these job cuts or information on severance packages. This lack of communication contrasts sharply with 2023, when CEO Ryan Roslansky publicly addressed a previous round of job cuts via email.
Currently, LinkedIn lists its total number of employees as being between 18,400 and 18,500. The recent layoffs are indicative of ongoing challenges within the tech sector, raising concerns about job stability as various companies adapt to changing market dynamics influenced by technological advancements.
