Heavy rainfall in Manipur over the past few days has caused severe flooding in Imphal, with the Imphal River overflowing on Saturday. The river, one of the largest in the region, has inundated several areas, leading to extensive damage.
This morning, Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla visited impacted neighborhoods, including Kangla Nongpok Thong, Lairikyengbam Leikai, and Singjamei Bridge. His tour included multiple spots along the riverbanks to evaluate the flooding situation.
During his visit, Governor Bhalla urged officials to keep a close watch on the river conditions and implement proactive measures. He also directed Deputy Commissioners to prepare for evacuations and establish temporary relief efforts for those affected. Units from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been activated for immediate response.
The flooding has particularly affected areas along the eastern bank of the Imphal River, including Khurai Heikrumakhong, Heingang Mayai Leikai, and Kontha Ahallup, submerging homes, businesses, and public institutions, and effectively paralyzing daily life.
Heavily affected regions include Palace Compound, New Checkon, Wangkhei Angom Leikai, and parts of Hatta Golapati. The All India Radio office in Palace Compound is also under water.
Chongtham Denison Meitei, the proprietor of Machi, a local business, voiced concerns about the flooding’s impact on operations. “Production has come to a standstill primarily due to power outages. The lack of electricity directly hampers our ability to grind, process, and package our Peh Chilli Powder,” he explained.
Transport disruptions have made it challenging to deliver goods, and team members are facing personal losses, contributing to a slower work pace. Despite these challenges, Meitei expressed determination to adapt, stating they are exploring backup power options and maintaining communication with customers to keep their spirits high.
Rescue operations involving NDRF, SDRF, and Assam Rifles have commenced, helping relocate residents to safer locations.
In light of the ongoing crisis, the state government has issued advisories advising the public to avoid travel to high-risk areas. They emphasized the importance of minimizing unnecessary movements to prevent traffic congestion, which can impede emergency services and the delivery of relief materials.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, heavy rain is expected to persist in isolated locations until June 1, 2025. The state has already been grappling with adverse effects like waterlogging, landslides, and traffic disruptions due to fallen trees.
Authorities urge vigilance during this challenging period. The Manipur State Power Distribution Company Limited has also advised residents to take precautions regarding electrical safety in the event of flooding, recommending disconnection of power supplies during adverse conditions.
Additionally, local volunteers from Arambai Tenggol have joined state rescue teams in efforts to assist vulnerable populations, particularly the elderly and children, from severely affected areas in Imphal.
