Discover How Plant-Based Diets Promote Weight Loss and Ease Hot Flashes
A new study by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine highlights the benefits of a plant-based diet for postmenopausal women. The research, published in the journal Menopause, shows that replacing animal products with plant foods, including soybeans, can lead to significant weight loss and a reduction in severe hot flashes.
Dr. Hana Kahleova, the study’s lead researcher, asserts that “avoiding animal products and instead eating vegan foods such as veggie burgers, breads, cereals, fruits, and vegetables is a prescription for fighting hot flashes.” She further emphasizes that even ultra-processed vegan foods, like soy milk and plant-based meat alternatives, can confer health benefits.
The research analyzed data from a previous study involving 84 postmenopausal women who experienced multiple moderate-to-severe hot flashes daily. Participants were randomly assigned to either a low-fat vegan diet group-consuming half a cup of cooked soybeans daily-or a control group following their usual diet for 12 weeks.
Results were striking: the vegan group saw a 92% reduction in severe hot flashes and an 88% decrease in moderate-to-severe hot flashes. In contrast, the control group experienced no significant changes, and their weight loss was minimal-about half a pound-compared to the vegan group’s loss of eight pounds.
The study also investigated whether the level of food processing affected the outcomes. Researchers categorized food based on the NOVA system, which segments foods into different levels of processing. They found that the vegan group consumed less unprocessed, minimally processed, and ultra-processed animal products, correlating with the observed weight loss and reduction in hot flashes. Interestingly, the processing level of plant foods did not influence weight or hot flash frequency, suggesting that the advantages of increasing plant-based intake are not dependent on processing levels.
This research underscores the potential health benefits of adopting a plant-based diet for postmenopausal women and offers an effective strategy for alleviating hot flashes and promoting weight loss.
