Jessica Pegula showcased her competitive spirit at Roland Garros on Thursday, achieving a hard-fought 6-3, 7-6(3) victory over fellow American Ann Li. This win marked Pegula’s 30th match victory of the season and catapulted her into the third round of the French Open for the third time in her career.
The world No. 3 initially faced a challenge as Li raced to a 2-0 lead in the first set. However, Pegula quickly gained control, utilizing her baseline consistency and mental strength. After leveling the score, she dominated the latter part of the set, winning six of the next seven games to clinch the first set.
In the second set, the contest intensified. Both players held serve through the first eight games, with Li, ranked 55th globally, having two crucial chances to break at 4-4. Yet Pegula, displaying the poise of a seasoned champion, responded with an impressive running forehand and a powerful serve that secured her an advantage.
During the tiebreak, Pegula’s calm demeanor shone through. A wide backhand from Li handed Pegula an early lead, and she completed the match with a precise backhand volley at the net.
Pegula’s triumph is part of a promising resurgence for American women at Roland Garros. With Coco Gauff seeded No. 2 and Madison Keys also advancing, this marks the first time since 2009, during the era of Venus and Serena Williams, that three American women have made it into the top 10 seeds.
Interestingly, nine American women competed in the second-round matches from the bottom half of the draw, highlighting a rare and significant representation on the Paris clay courts.
Looking ahead, Pegula will face Marketa Vondrousova, a former Roland Garros finalist and the 2023 Wimbledon champion, who recently edged past No. 25 Magdalena Frech in three sets. While it promises to be a tough match, Pegula heads into it brimming with confidence, having amassed more victories this season than any WTA player aside from Aryna Sabalenka.
