Dhaka: Jamaat-e-Islami leader ATM Azharul Islam was released from prison on Wednesday after the Supreme Court of Bangladesh acquitted him of his death sentence, a decision made on Tuesday. Azharul had previously been sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) for crimes against humanity during the country’s Liberation War in 1971. This ruling has sparked outrage among many in the violence-affected South Asian nation, as reported by local media.
Having spent nearly 13 years in prison for war crimes, Azharul was welcomed by party leaders and supporters upon his release. He immediately attended a rally at the Shahbagh intersection, showcasing the evident support from his radical followers.
