Serious Allegations: Illegal Coal Mining and Drug Trade in Northeast India
In a press conference held in the national capital, Gaurav Gogoi, the newly appointed president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, accused the BJP government of permitting Northeast India to become a hub for illegal coal mining and the drug trade. Speaking at the “Rising Northeast Summit” in Delhi, Gogoi criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address, claiming it was disconnected from the reality of the region’s businesses and investments. He asserted that the BJP’s governance has enabled these illegal activities, directly challenging the party’s claims of development.
Gogoi referenced operations planned for April 24, 2025, involving locations such as Jagadiki Team, Nongalbibra, Jadugofa, and Margherita, as evidence of an ongoing “illegal coal syndicate nexus” operating between Meghalaya and Assam. He highlighted a press release from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) dated April 25, detailing how the syndicate ensures illegal coal-laden trucks cross borders unchecked by using forged documents to present the mining as legal. During the operation, the ED seized cash amounting to ₹1.58 crore, digital devices, and two high-end vehicles suspected to have been purchased with illicit funds.
Gogoi’s remarks are likely to spark political controversy in Assam and the broader Northeast region, putting pressure on the BJP to address these serious allegations concerning illegal mining and drug trafficking.
