Minister Ojing Tasing Fleeing Mob Highlights Tensions at Siang Anti-Dam Protest
Tensions flared in Arunachal Pradesh’s Siang district on Tuesday as Minister Ojing Tasing was compelled to leave the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Pangin due to a large protest. The minister’s visit coincided with a demonstration against the proposed 11,000 MW Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP), leading to a volatile situation with villagers and activists vocalizing their opposition.
Tasing, who serves as the local MLA and Arunachal Pradesh’s Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, attended a meeting with district officials and community representatives. However, his appearance ignited the anger of protesters who have consistently called for the cessation of survey and investigation activities related to the project.
As tensions escalated, demonstrators surrounded the building, chanting slogans demanding the immediate cancellation of the project. With the situation rapidly deteriorating, security personnel intervened, escorting Tasing and other officials from the area.
Amid police efforts to restore order, reports emerged of an injured woman. Eyewitness accounts and circulating videos suggest that Minister Tasing was seen striking a protesting woman, an action that has drawn widespread criticism and condemnation as inappropriate behavior for a public official.
Despite no formal statements from the district administration or the minister’s office regarding the incident, the unrest has underscored the deepening local dissent against the SUMP and heightened concerns about regional stability. Further developments on the situation are anticipated.
