Health experts emphasized the fundamental role of a balanced diet, adequate sleep, and regular physical activity in fostering healthy childhood development during a recent webinar titled “How to Raise a Healthy Child” held in Vellore. Organized by The Hindu and Naruvi Hospitals, this event marked the 11th installment in the ongoing “Healthy India Happy India” initiative aimed at promoting overall well-being.
Focusing on child health and the developmental journey from infancy to adolescence, the panellists stressed the importance of nutrition, regular growth monitoring, and effective parenting techniques. Their insights are especially relevant as families look to support their children in becoming confident and joyful individuals.
Dr. Murugesan A., an Assistant Professor in Neonatology at the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) in Puducherry, highlighted the significance of the Mother and Child Protection (MCP) card. This tool, developed by government ministries, serves as a comprehensive guide for expectant parents and caregivers. “The MCP card details the necessary steps for each month of pregnancy and the growth of newborns, including vaccination schedules, breastfeeding techniques, and nutritional guidance. It’s a resource that every family should utilize,” he stated. Notably, he mentioned that 90% of pregnancies in India are normal, underscoring that families can focus on maintaining health and wellness during this critical phase.
Sonia Mary Kurian, head of the Department of Paediatrics at Naruvi Hospitals, further noted the importance of nutritional diversity after six months of exclusive breastfeeding. “While a mother can continue breastfeeding up to two years, integrating various foods is essential for balanced nutrition. Prolonged reliance on bottle-feeding can lead to obesity and chronic health issues later in life,” she warned. Kurian advised parents to monitor development milestones closely, identifying potential delays in areas such as walking, talking, and social interaction during the formative years.
V. Nagarajan, a consultant pediatrician at Naruvi Hospitals, addressed the challenges facing adolescents aged 10 to 19, including anxiety disorders, anemia, and obesity. He emphasized the critical role parents play in providing a nurturing environment, advocating for open communication and healthy role modeling. “Adolescence can be a rebellious time; parents must exemplify healthy habits and create a supportive atmosphere that fosters independence and confidence,” he remarked.
Dr. Nagarajan also pointed out the existing stigma around seeking professional help for adolescent health issues, stressing that awareness and proactive engagement are essential for well-being during these critical years. “Meaningful interaction and real-world learning opportunities can significantly influence a child’s development,” he added.
