A local court in Assam’s Biswanath district has sentenced a couple to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for the molestation of a minor. Jiten Bhumij and his wife Monika were found guilty in a case involving the molestation of Jiten’s 16-year-old niece. According to an advocate involved in the case, Jiten was the perpetrator, while Monika was identified as an accomplice. The District and Sessions Judge of Biswanath imposed the sentence under the POCSO Act, also levying a fine of Rs 15,000 on each of the convicted. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional jail term, the advocate noted.

In a separate ruling, a husband-wife duo in Jorhat, Bitul and Dipti Borah, were sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for drug-related offenses. The Jorhat District and Sessions-cum-Special Judge convicted the couple under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Each received a fine of Rs 1,000, with one month of extra imprisonment for any default in payment. These cases highlight ongoing legal action against serious offenses in Assam, underlining the courts’ commitment to dealing sternly with such crimes.
