Haibargaon Railway Station in Assam’s Nagaon district was inaugurated on Thursday by Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, following a nationwide virtual launch by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This redevelopment signifies a pivotal step in the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), marking Haibargaon as the first of 50 stations in Assam set to be upgraded under this initiative.
Investing around Rs 15.85 crore, the newly revamped station boasts modern amenities for passengers, enhanced accessibility, and improved infrastructure to elevate the travel experience. Haibargaon is among 103 railway stations nationwide inaugurated in this phase of the ABSS, aimed at the long-term transformation of Indian Railways’ infrastructure.
This development is especially significant for Northeast India. Selecting Haibargaon as the state’s inaugural station under the scheme highlights the government’s intent to better integrate the region with the national transport network. The upgrade is anticipated to enhance connectivity, stimulate local development, and indicate the beginning of a larger infrastructural overhaul in the state.
The Northeast Frontier Railway, which oversees the station, views this upgrade as a crucial step in fulfilling the government’s promise to modernize rail services and promote regional growth. The other 49 stations in Assam designated for redevelopment under ABSS are expected to adopt a similar focus on improving passenger experiences.
During the inauguration, officials emphasized that the station’s redesign incorporates local cultural elements, merging infrastructure development with regional identity. This alignment underscores the government’s commitment to not only upgrading facilities but also preserving and celebrating the unique culture of the area.
