Smita Patil was a celebrated actress, renowned for her exceptional talent, but her unexpected passing in 1986 left her fans in shock. Before her death, she starred in notable films including Mirch Masala, Manthan, Bhoomika, Arth, and shared the screen with Amitabh Bachchan in projects like Namak Halaal and Shakti. In a recent interview, her son, Prateik, recounted an interesting moment that occurred on the set of Ramesh Sippy’s Shakti, where Amitabh Bachchan approached Smita while she was having lunch on the floor with the light men.
In a conversation featured on Varinder Chawla’s YouTube channel, Prateik revealed that during the filming of Shakti, which also included actors Dilip Kumar and Rakhee, Smita would bring a large lunch box from home. During breaks, she would sit on the floor with the light men and enjoy her meal alongside them. Prateik remarked, “Such a big superstar… Smita Patil, she was sitting on the floor with all the lightmen.”
On one of these occasions, Amitabh happened to walk past and noticed Smita’s casual nature. He called her aside and remarked that her camaraderie with the crew was making others look bad. He expressed his concern, saying, “Listen, you are screwing it up for people like us. You sit on the floor with everyone, so we look bad. Now we will also have to do it. We are looking bad because of you.” However, Smita remained unfazed and replied, “You go to your van; I’ll eat like this.”
Their professional relationship was noteworthy. Amitabh once shared on his blog that Smita felt quite uncomfortable during the filming of Namak Halaal because she struggled to understand certain directions. He noted her gentleness and strength, stating, “But she did it with a lot of personal persuasion from me and it came out fine. She was gentle and frail but stronger than anything you could ever encounter in a woman… truly a gift we lost we never should have.”
