Watch the Chaos: 15 Minutes of Downpour Sparks Devastating Waterlogging in Andheri, Mumbai!
Heavy rains swept across Mumbai and its neighboring areas on Tuesday evening, prompting social media users on platform X to share alarming footage of waterlogged streets, particularly in Andheri and Saki Naka. While the rainfall brought some respite from soaring temperatures, it significantly disrupted road traffic, especially on the Western Express Highway.
Viral videos depicted individuals navigating knee-deep water on Old Nagardas Road in Andheri. One X user commented, “A little bit of Mumbai rains and we have waterlogging at Old Nagardas Road, Andheri East.” Another user tagged the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), stating, “#MumbaiRains 15 mins of rains causing mayhem at Nagardas Road.”
Social activist Zoru Bhathena took a dig at the BMC regarding waterlogging issues at Andheri Subway. In a post, he suggested, “Hello My BMC. May we suggest you install a sign at both ends of Andheri Subway: ‘THIS IS A DRAIN USE DURING DRY WEATHER ONLY.’ This sign will fix the problem… and save Mumbaikars a few hundred crores too.”
In Saki Naka, a video shared by user Sagar Shah illustrated the grim aftermath of the downpour, with piles of garbage amid the flooding. He expressed frustration, stating, “This is Mumbai? Saki Naka as of now is an overflowing gutter! Please help. We deserve better!” Another user chimed in, “This is Mumbai’s world-famous Naka… Saki Naka,” retweeting Shah’s concerns.
Criticism of the BMC continued as user Tanmay Tamhane noted the inadequacy of the drainage system, pointing out that even light rainfall led to such chaotic flooding across Mumbai.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has since issued a yellow alert for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), predicting light to moderate rainfall over the next four days. The IMD warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of up to 50 km/h in isolated areas. Furthermore, heavy rains are expected in various parts of Maharashtra between May 21 and 24, driven by a cyclonic circulation forming over the east-central Arabian Sea off Karnataka’s coast. Meteorologist Shubhangi Bhute stated that rainfall activity in Maharashtra would likely intensify in that timeframe due to the cyclonic influences.
As Mumbai grapples with the impact of these early monsoon rains, residents express their concerns about the city’s infrastructure and readiness for the impending monsoon season. With rain forecasted to continue, it remains to be seen how the city’s drainage systems will cope and whether the BMC will implement solutions to address these recurring issues.
Amidst the rain-related turmoil, videos and posts on X illustrate the urgent need for improved urban planning and effective disaster management. As Mumbaikars call for better facilities and faster responses from officials, it is imperative that the relevant authorities heed their concerns to prevent further chaos in the days to come.
