Powerful Partnership: Pakistan and China Bolt Ahead to Strengthen Trade, Investments, and Communication!
Pakistan announced on Wednesday its intent to enhance trade and investment relations with China, shortly after a ceasefire with India following a severe military conflict. This development comes in the wake of four days of intense fighting-the worst in nearly 30 years-ignited by a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam district on April 22, which claimed 26 lives.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar met with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, in Beijing, marking the first visit by a senior Pakistani official since India executed precision strikes on May 7 against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. These strikes, part of ‘Operation Sindoor,’ were a direct response to the Pahalgam attack.
During the meeting, Dar briefed Wang on the current situation following the establishment of the ceasefire. They also discussed the longstanding military tensions exacerbated by India’s recent military actions and New Delhi’s decision to suspend the 1960 Indus Water Treaty. On the same day, China reiterated its call for a “comprehensive and lasting ceasefire” between India and Pakistan, urging both nations to address their differences through dialogue.
Wang expressed China’s support for Pakistan in safeguarding its national sovereignty and territorial integrity, as reported by the state-run Xinhua news agency. The two nations also agreed on the need for closer cooperation across various sectors, including trade, investment, agriculture, and industrialization, according to Pakistan’s foreign ministry.
The military conflict escalated significantly after an attack on Indian soldiers on the night of May 6-7, which prompted immediate retaliatory strikes by the Indian Armed Forces targeting militant launchpads in both Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. In response, Pakistan began heavy shelling along the Line of Control (LoC) the following day, as cross-border tensions surged.
As the situation intensified, India targeted various Pakistani military sites, including air defense systems, with precision strikes eliminating multiple potential threats. Pakistan retaliated with drone and missile attacks along India’s western border, which were largely intercepted by India’s formidable air defense systems, including the S-400 missile defense system.
The confrontations persisted over consecutive days, culminating in airstrikes on four key military bases in Pakistan by the Indian Armed Forces, employing advanced air-launched weapons. By the evening of May 10, both countries agreed to halt hostilities, although reports indicate that Pakistan violated this agreement later that night.
This latest round of hostilities and diplomatic maneuvering highlights the fragility of peace in the region, with ongoing military and political ramifications. As both India and Pakistan navigate their intertwined futures, the role of China as a mediator and a partner will be pivotal.
