On International Tea Day, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed warm greetings to the tea garden community, recognizing their significant contributions to Assam’s culture, economy, and heritage over the past 200 years. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he stated, “On #InternationalTeaDay, I extend my best wishes to our tea garden community.” He emphasized the integral role of tea tribes in defining Assam’s identity, noting, “The tea tribes are an intrinsic part of Assam’s society and have enriched our culture over the last 200 years. Our Government has taken a host of steps to empower and uplift them in the last four years.”

In a follow-up post, Sarma highlighted the historical and economic importance of Assam’s tea industry and announced a significant welfare initiative for tea garden workers. “As we celebrate 200 years of Assam Tea, our Government will provide Rs 5,000 as one-time aid to over 7 lakh tea garden workers,” he revealed.

He also shared a brief video outlining various welfare initiatives aimed at enhancing the community’s quality of life. These initiatives include the establishment of model schools, deployment of mobile medical units, and the provision of wage compensation for pregnant tea garden workers. These efforts reflect the government’s comprehensive vision to improve the living standards and well-being of this essential workforce.
