Cuomo’s spokesperson, Rich Azzopardi, questioned the timing of the leaks, suggesting it could be politically motivated. “We have never been informed of any such matter, so why would someone leak it now? The answer is obvious: This is lawfare and election interference, plain and simple-something President Trump and his top Department of Justice officials say they are against,” Azzopardi stated. He maintained that Cuomo testified truthfully, insisting that the former governor offered to answer any additional questions but faced a politically charged environment.
The House committee had sought clarity on whether Cuomo consulted anyone outside the Health Department while drafting or editing the report, to which he reportedly responded negatively. However, a former executive assistant claimed in testimony that handwritten notes on a draft appeared to belong to Cuomo. Furthermore, the committee presented an email from June 2020 that indicated Cuomo had made edits to the report, with a request for staff review.
Cuomo resigned from the governor’s office in August 2021 after a report from Attorney General Letitia James detailed allegations of sexual harassment against multiple women, leading to an impeachment inquiry. Cuomo has categorically denied these accusations.
The ongoing investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia began prior to the appointment of interim U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro, who replaced Ed Martin. Notably, Martin had publicly expressed intentions to criticize individuals whom the Justice Department chose not to charge, deviating from established protocols.
Complications emerged during Trump’s second term when several Department of Justice officials resigned over how a corruption case involving New York Mayor Eric Adams was handled. Tensions arose when administration figures sought to drop the case as Adams began cooperating with federal immigration enforcement efforts. This issue was contentious enough that a federal judge dismissed charges against Adams, asserting that future potential charges could not be used as leverage against him.
