Special Team Investigates Madhya Pradesh Minister’s Controversial Comments
Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh Police established a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) late Monday night to investigate state minister Vijay Shah’s remarks against Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, following a directive from the Supreme Court. The SIT will be led by Inspector General of Police Pramod Verma, with Deputy Inspector General Kalyan Chakravarty and Superintendent of Police Vahini Singh as members.
The Supreme Court criticized Shah for his “crass” comments regarding Col Qureshi and mandated the formation of an SIT to examine the FIR lodged against him. The court instructed the Director General of Police in Madhya Pradesh to assemble this SIT by 10 am on Tuesday, ensuring that it includes a female officer, in accordance with a previous order from the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
This order to form the SIT was issued by Kailash Makwana, the Madhya Pradesh DGP, emphasizing compliance with the Supreme Court’s instruction. Currently, Pramod Verma serves as the Inspector General for the Sagar range, while Kalyan Chakravarty is the Deputy Inspector General for the SAF in Bhopal, and Vahini Singh holds the position of Superintendent of Police in Dindori.
Shah faced backlash after a widely circulated video appeared to show him making inappropriate remarks about Col Qureshi. Col Qureshi gained notable recognition along with Wing Commander Vyomika Singh during media briefings on Operation Sindoor. The Madhya Pradesh High Court condemned Shah for his “scurrilous” language and directed the police to file an FIR against him for inciting enmity and hatred.
In the wake of the widespread criticism, the minister has expressed remorse, stating that he holds Col Qureshi in higher regard than his own sister.
