She Convicted for Spying for Pakistan: Shocking 2018 Case Breakdown

Many years before YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra faced espionage charges, the case of Madhuri Gupta, an Indian diplomat, sent shockwaves through India’s political circles. In 2010, Gupta was arrested for allegedly spying for Pakistan, following investigations that revealed she had been honey-trapped by intelligence operatives while stationed there.

Gupta, who was sentenced to three years in prison for espionage in 2018, passed away in 2021 at the age of 64. At the time of her death, an appeal against her conviction was still pending in the Delhi High Court. In espionage terminology, a “honey trap” refers to the use of romantic entanglements to elicit sensitive information from individuals, often through emotional manipulation or blackmail.

Two operatives from Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) played pivotal roles in Gupta’s honey trap. They ensnared her during her tenure at the Indian High Commission in Islamabad, where she worked as the Second Secretary for Press and Information. According to the prosecution, Gupta began relaying classified information to her Pakistani handlers in 2008, long before her arrest in 2010.

The ISI agents, Mubshar Raza Rana and Jamshed, recruited her effectively, resulting in her delivering sensitive details until her capture. Following her arrest, the Delhi Police recovered emails sent to her ISI handlers from devices like laptops and BlackBerry phones. Gupta also communicated sensitive information directly to ISI agents.

During her trial, the court scrutinized emails where Gupta assured her ISI contacts that she would gather information on critical hydroelectric projects in Jammu and Kashmir. The court stated, “It is seen that the accused was unable to give such information but her intention of passing on such information and her going to Jammu after giving the false excuse of attending marriage points out her intention of helping the enemy country. She had been giving information regarding various postings of officers of defence, MEA, and HCI, as well as their family particulars, which could have endangered their lives.”

Gupta’s narrative resembles the thrilling elements of espionage fiction. Jamshed, known as Jim, strategically engaged her romantically. Several years younger than Gupta, he cultivated their relationship with an agenda, as Gupta had even indicated plans to marry him, as referenced in an email reported by The Print. The Times of India noted that a female journalist initially connected Gupta with Jamshed and Rana after they assisted her in locating a book.

Reports indicated Gupta’s devotion to Jim was such that she considered converting to Islam to marry him. Jamshed and Rana meticulously exploited her professional grievances, manipulating her emotions and compromising her loyalty, according to journalist Raj Shekhar Jha. After receiving intelligence about Gupta’s risks, the Ministry of External Affairs summoned her to Delhi under the pretext of her involvement in preparing for the upcoming SAARC Summit. She was arrested upon her arrival in the capital.
