Tragic End: Who Was Muhammad Sinwar? Hamas Leader Found Dead in Gaza Tunnel After Devastating Israeli Bombing

Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, stated on Sunday that Mohammed Sinwar, a high-ranking Hamas commander and brother of the late Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, was ‘likely killed’ in an airstrike on Gaza last week. This information, reported by News18 and other outlets, was shared during a closed-door meeting with parliament members. Katz noted, “Based on all indications, Mohammed Sinwar was killed in a strike carried out on the grounds of the European Hospital in Khan Younis.”

Born on September 16, 1975, in the Khan Yunis refugee camp, Mohammed Sinwar has been a significant figure within Hamas, having served as the leader of the Gaza Strip operations and as the head of the Ezzedeen Al-Qassam Brigades since October 2024, according to The New York Times. Sinwar’s militant career began in 1991 when he joined Hamas after being arrested by Israeli forces for suspected terrorism. Although he faced several years of imprisonment by the Palestinian Authority in the 1990s, he continued his ascent within the organization.

Known as ‘The Shadow’ for his often behind-the-scenes role, Sinwar became the commander of Hamas’ Khan Younis brigade in 2005. His notoriety increased in 2006 when he participated in the abduction of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, a hostage exchange that ultimately freed 1,027 Palestinian prisoners, including his brother Yahya, in 2011.

Israeli intelligence suggests Sinwar played a pivotal role in orchestrating the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. In response, Israel placed a $300,000 bounty on information regarding his whereabouts. The threat he posed led to multiple attempts on his life, including six assassination attempts in May 2021. Although false reports of his death circulated during the 2014 Israel-Gaza War, evidence now points to his involvement in various militant operations.

On May 13, the Israel Security Agency and the IDF reported that Sinwar was specifically targeted in an airstrike that hit a bunker beneath the European Hospital in Khan Younis. According to reports by the Saudi channel Al-Hadath, his body was allegedly recovered from a tunnel along with another Hamas figure, Muhammad Shabana. However, as of now, there has been no official confirmation of these claims.

The situation remains dynamic, with ongoing tensions in the region and frequent developments surrounding Hamas leadership. The implications of Mohammed Sinwar’s potential death could resonate widely within the ongoing conflict, as his leadership role significantly influenced Hamas’ strategic operations against Israel.

As events unfold, following the latest updates on this topic is crucial for understanding the broader implications for both Israeli security and the Palestinian response.
