Liam Payne to Perform One Last Time at Summer ‘Building the Band’ Series
Liam Payne will make his final television appearance in Netflix’s upcoming music competition series, Building the Band, set to debut this summer. The late singer, known globally for his role in One Direction, had completed filming the show prior to his death in October 2024.
The announcement was made during Netflix’s upfront presentation by Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria, who stated, “People will be obsessed with Building the Band coming this summer, hosted by AJ McLean.” The series will feature Payne as a guest judge and mentor, alongside Kelly Rowland and Nicole Scherzinger.
His participation had been in doubt following his sudden death in Buenos Aires, where he tragically fell from a hotel balcony. In connection with the incident, five individuals have since been charged.
Netflix has confirmed it consulted with Payne’s family before deciding to proceed with the show’s release. The program had already been filmed, including three live shows shot at Manchester’s Aviva Studios in August 2024.
The format of Building the Band challenges singers to form a group without meeting face-to-face, echoing the blind-connection concept popularized by Love Is Blind. The series aims to blend reality TV drama with insights from the music industry, with each mentor guiding contestants through the formation and evolution of their new bands.
This release will serve as a poignant farewell for Payne, who had been working on revitalizing his solo career and reconnecting with fans. His final presence on screen adds significant emotional depth to the series.
