Justice Served: Madras High Court Stays NEET-UG Results Amid Outrage Over Exam Power Cut for Chennai Students!
The Madras High Court has issued an interim stay on the release of NEET-UG-2025 results, following a plea from students impacted by a power outage during their examination in Chennai. The court’s decision came after a hearing on Friday, where Justice V Lakshminarayanan scheduled the next session for June 2 to further examine the matter.
The plea was filed by 13 students from the PM Shri Kendriya Vidyalaya CRPF-Avadi, who reported that a severe storm and heavy rain led to a power outage at their examination center for over an hour on May 4, 2025. The outage, which lasted from approximately 3:00 PM to 4:15 PM, left the students in poor lighting conditions without backup power sources such as generators or inverters. Rainwater further complicated matters, entering the examination hall and disrupting the test as they were ordered to shift from their assigned seats.
The affected students stated in their affidavit that they struggled to complete the exam adequately due to these conditions. They argued that the examination authorities failed to offer any additional time to accommodate the disruption, which they believe led to an uneven playing field compared to candidates at other centers.
In their petition, the students contended that the circumstances violated Article 14 of the Constitution, which guarantees equality before the law, as they faced significantly disadvantaged conditions relative to their peers. They also claimed their rights under Article 21, which protects individual life and personal liberty, had been compromised. The students emphasized that “a national-level competitive exam like NEET must ensure a level playing field, which was denied to the petitioners.”
The petitioners noted that their complaints were not addressed by the examination authorities despite presenting their concerns on the same day as the exam. The respondents in the case include prominent entities such as the Union Government, the National Medical Commission, and the National Testing Agency responsible for conducting NEET.
This legal development has stirred debate regarding the fairness and management of national examinations in adverse weather conditions.
