In a tragic incident during an anti-Maoist operation, Maharabam Prabo Singh, a 46-year-old officer with the CRPF from Manipur, lost his life after being struck by lightning in the Saranda forests of Chaibasa, Jharkhand. Singh, originally from the West Imphal district, was serving as the Second-in-Command of the 26th Battalion when the incident occurred at around 5:30 PM amid heavy rainfall. He was part of a joint operation with Jharkhand Police targeting Maoist activities in the Baliva forests.
Unfortunately, the lightning struck Singh, causing critical injuries. He succumbed to his wounds while being treated at MKCG Medical College and Hospital on Friday. In addition to Singh, three other personnel sustained serious injuries during the same event: Assistant Commandant Subir Mandal (CRPF) and Assistant Sub-Inspectors Sudesh and Chandlal Hansda, both from the Jharkhand Jaguar Force. All of them were engaged in the coordinated counter-insurgency mission aimed at curtailing Maoist influence in the region.
The CRPF expressed their condolences on social media, stating: “On 15th May 2025, during an anti-Maoist operation conducted by 26 Battalion of #CRPF in the Chhotanagra region of West Singhbhum, Jharkhand, Second-in-Command Shri Maharabam Prabo Singh tragically lost his life after being struck by lightning. #CRPF offers heartfelt tributes to the brave officer who laid down his life in the line of duty under such unfortunate circumstances. In this moment of profound grief, the entire Force stands in solidarity with the bereaved family.” The injured personnel are currently receiving treatment, and while their condition is critical, it is reported to be stable according to sources.
