Govt’s Exciting New Support for Gig Workers: A Big Boost for Delivery Drivers!
A proposal to extend pensions to millions of gig workers in India is expected to be presented to the Cabinet next month. As reported by CNBC Awaaz, major companies including Ola, Uber, and Amazon have shown support for this initiative, signaling a potential transformation in the lives of gig workers. This includes delivery personnel from Zomato, Swiggy, Amazon, and Flipkart, who will also benefit from the scheme.
Gig workers are typically employed on a contract basis, receiving payment per task or project. They encompass a range of roles, including freelancers, online service providers, content creators, delivery personnel, and cab drivers. Unlike permanent employees, gig workers operate on a ‘pay-per-task’ model.
The pension proposal has garnered backing from companies like Amazon and Zomato, which will contribute a designated percentage of funds to be managed by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). The plan offers gig workers two pension options, aiming to provide them with social security while addressing demands for health benefits and retirement plans.
Earlier this year, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the government’s intention to create a dedicated platform for gig workers as part of the Union Budget. This initiative is designed to identify gig workers and facilitate access to healthcare services and additional benefits.
This initiative represents a significant shift in the gig economy, enhancing the financial stability of delivery workers, cab drivers, and other contract-based employees.
