Dozens were killed in Israeli airstrikes across the Gaza Strip on Thursday, according to reports from the territory’s health ministry, amid ongoing efforts by the Trump administration to negotiate a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas that remain stalled. Israeli negotiators traveled to Qatar this week for renewed indirect talks with Hamas regarding the release of remaining hostages. The following day, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed discussions with Steve Witkoff, Trump’s Middle East envoy. Nevertheless, a source familiar with the negotiations noted that optimism for a significant breakthrough remains low, speaking on the condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to discuss the talks publicly.
Despite these diplomatic efforts, the Israeli military campaign has continued unabated. On Tuesday, Israeli jets targeted the vicinity of the European Hospital in Khan Younis, aiming to eliminate Muhammad Sinwar, a high-ranking Hamas leader. Muhammad’s older brother, Yahya Sinwar, was the architect of the October 7 attacks and previously led Hamas until he was killed by Israeli forces last year. Neither Israel nor Hamas has released information on the fate of Muhammad Sinwar following the airstrike.
As the situation continues to unfold, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza deepens, with civilians bearing the brunt of the conflict. The world watches closely as diplomatic efforts to halt the violence face hurdles, and the casualties mount, raising urgent calls for a resolution to this ongoing tragedy.
