Operations Uninterrupted After Deadly Attack on Militants in Manipur
Operations are ongoing following an encounter in Manipur’s Chandel district, where Assam Rifles personnel killed at least ten militants. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening and is situated near the India-Myanmar border in a remote, hilly area, approximately 130 km from the state capital, Imphal.
Officials confirmed that the operation continues as of Thursday morning. A Defence PRO based in Kohima stated to PTI, “The operation is still underway, and further details will be released once it concludes.”
The Eastern Command of the Army reported via X that the Assam Rifles unit, part of the Spear Corps, acted on specific intelligence regarding armed militants near New Samtal village in Khengjoy tehsil. The operation commenced on May 14, and during the engagement, soldiers were fired upon by militants. The troops responded quickly, repositioning themselves and retaliating effectively. This confrontation resulted in the neutralization of ten militants and the recovery of a considerable cache of arms and ammunition.
The situation remains fluid, and authorities have noted that further updates will follow as the operation progresses. The conflict in this region underscores ongoing security challenges, with recent events highlighting tensions between various groups, including reports concerning a Kuki group threatening the Meitei community ahead of the Shirui Festival, an issue the Manipur police have since denied.
