
Justice B.R. Gavai Takes Office as India’s 52nd Chief Justice: A New Era Begins
President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to Justice B.R. Gavai as the Chief Justice of India (CJI) in a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi, on May 14. Justice Gavai, the 52nd CJI, will serve for over six months, with his term concluding on November 23, 2025. His appointment was approved by the Centre on April 29 following a recommendation from the outgoing CJI, Sanjiv Khanna.
According to a notification from the Union Ministry of Law and Justice, “In exercise of the powers conferred by Clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, Judge of the Supreme Court, to be the Chief Justice of India with effect from 14th May, 2025.”
Justice Gavai was elevated to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019. Over the past six years, he has participated in approximately 700 Benches, handling cases in various areas such as constitutional and administrative law, civil and criminal law, commercial disputes, arbitration, electricity, education, and environmental law. He has authored around 300 judgments, including significant rulings from the Constitution Bench that reinforce the rule of law and protect the fundamental, human, and legal rights of citizens.
Justice Gavai began his judicial career as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court in November 2003 and became a permanent Judge in November 2005. Prior to his elevation, he specialized in constitutional and administrative law and served as Standing Counsel for several local government entities, including the Municipal Corporation of Nagpur and Amravati University. His earlier roles included Assistant Government Pleader and Additional Public Prosecutor at the Bombay High Court’s Nagpur Bench. He was appointed as Government Pleader and Public Prosecutor for the Nagpur Bench on January 17, 2000.
