Five days after India’s Operation Sindoor, an encounter erupted between security forces and terrorists in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, officials reported. The confrontation started based on intelligence regarding the presence of terrorists in the Shukroo Keller area, leading security forces to initiate a cordon and search operation. The operation escalated into an exchange of gunfire when the terrorists opened fire on the forces, who returned fire. As of now, there are no reports of casualties on either side.
This encounter marks the first in Jammu and Kashmir in 11 days, occurring at a significant time following Operation Sindoor, which was India’s counterstrike in response to the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed the lives of 26 civilians. The Indian government has since engaged in airstrikes targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir, issuing warnings that any future terror attacks would be viewed as acts of war, eliciting a severe response.
On May 7, India conducted airstrikes on terror targets in Pakistan and PoK, emphasizing that its actions were precise and aimed solely at terrorists. In retaliation, Pakistan launched heavy shelling, resulting in civilian casualties and a barrage of drones and missiles directed towards civilian areas. However, India’s air defense systems intercepted most of these projectiles. Subsequently, India targeted key military installations in Pakistan, intensifying the conflict.
A ceasefire was announced on May 10, but Indian armed forces have made it clear that they are monitoring Pakistan closely, and any missteps could lead to immediate action. The ongoing situation remains tense as security forces continue their operations in the region amid concerns over further terrorist activity.
