Over 1800 Homes Damaged: Urgent Response Needed After Torrential Rain
Agartala: Severe rains and thunderstorms that started late Sunday night have caused widespread damage across Tripura, affecting over 1,800 homes and forcing hundreds to evacuate to relief shelters.
The State Emergency Operation Centre reported that a total of 1,835 residences have been impacted; among these, 51 houses were completely destroyed, 615 suffered severe damage, and 1,169 experienced partial damage. Mohanpur subdivision was the hardest hit, where 1,809 houses were affected.
In response to this crisis, swift relief operations have commenced, with four camps established to house 991 displaced individuals. Other affected areas include Jampuijala in the Sepahijala district, where 22 homes were damaged, and Jirania, where four houses faced partial destruction. Thankfully, there have been no reported injuries or fatalities.
The storm also inflicted considerable damage to public infrastructure. In Karbook (Gomati district), strong winds uprooted four electricity poles, and one pole fell in Udaipur. Restoration efforts are currently in progress with assistance from the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL). In North Tripura, a large tree obstructed the Padmapur-Harichand Road in Dharmanagar, blocking traffic, but Civil Defence and Aapda Mitra volunteers have cleared the way.
Despite the heavy rainfall, river levels across the state remain below danger thresholds. The Bijoy River in Bishalgarh measured 11.10 meters, slightly above its usual level, but not presenting a flood hazard. Khowai district recorded the highest rainfall at 96.4 mm.
Mohanpur Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Subhas Datta indicated significant damage from hailstorms and thunderstorms, especially in the Simna constituency. Croplands, rubber plantations, and older homes were notably affected, leading many families to seek refuge in relief camps due to roof damage from the persistent rain.
