India’s Cross-Border Strikes: Lt Gen Kalita’s Strong Endorsement

Guwahati, May 13: The ongoing “limited war” with Pakistan has revealed critical insights about India’s stance on terrorism. Lt Gen Rana Pratap Kalita (Retd), former General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Indian Army’s Eastern Command, stated that India has demonstrated a robust zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism, emphasizing that any attack on Indian citizens will not go unanswered. Speaking to The Assam Tribune, he highlighted that India’s actions signal it will not be constrained by international borders when retaliating against attacks on its citizens. Furthermore, he noted that any future acts of terrorism will be treated as acts of war.

Lt Gen Kalita pointed out that recent events illustrate India’s resolve to act independently of international pressure, targeting those who pose a threat to its citizens. He introduced the concept of a new warfare paradigm, where unmanned aerial vehicles, aircraft, and missiles can fulfill military objectives without deploying traditional ground troops. He stressed the increasing role technology will play in future conflicts.

When asked why China has remained uninvolved despite concerns, Lt Gen Kalita explained that while Pakistan utilizes Chinese military equipment, China itself would refrain from direct engagement. He noted that the Galwan face-off in 2020 did not escalate into a full-scale war, and that China might prefer India remain preoccupied with Pakistan.

The retired officer praised India’s recent military actions against terrorist bases, asserting that such measures were necessary, as Pakistan has consistently failed to deal with terrorists operating from its territory. He recalled the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, where over 175 people were killed and more than 300 injured, noting that despite providing evidence to Pakistan regarding the involvement of its terrorists, no action was taken, as Pakistan denied the terrorists’ presence.

Regarding the likelihood of Pakistan ceasing its support for terrorist activities, Lt Gen Kalita expressed skepticism. He believes that Pakistan will continue its efforts to send terrorists into India and urged Indian forces to remain vigilant and maintain their guard.
