Suspected drones were detected along the International Border in the Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, prompting a quick response from Indian security forces. Simultaneously, a surveillance drone was successfully downed by the armed forces near Mand village in Punjab’s Jalandhar district.
The Indian Army reported, “A small number of suspected drones have been observed near Samba in J&K. They are being engaged,” initially assuring the public that there was no need for alarm. Later in the day, the Army reaffirmed that the situation was under control, stating, “No enemy drones are being reported at present. The situation is calm and under full control.” This reassurance came in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent address and the meeting between Indian and Pakistani Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs), highlighting the ongoing fragile security landscape along the border.
In light of the drone activity, authorities implemented precautionary blackouts across several sensitive areas, including Samba, Kathua, Rajouri, Jammu, and even the revered Mata Vaishno Devi cave shrine. This measure was enacted following a recent spate of cross-border hostilities that extended from northern districts such as Kupwara and Baramulla to Rajouri, Poonch, Akhnoor, and the Pargwal sector, raising heightened concerns about security.
In Jalandhar, Punjab, armed forces effectively neutralized a surveillance drone around 9:20 PM near Mand village. Jalandhar Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Aggarwal confirmed, “I have been informed that one surveillance drone was brought down. An expert team is looking for the debris.” He urged residents to stay away from any suspected wreckage and to report it to the nearest police station.
Aggarwal also emphasized public safety, advising citizens to remain calm and refrain from using firecrackers, which had been reported in some areas. Lights were temporarily switched off around Suranassi in Jalandhar as an extra precaution.
These incidents are set against the backdrop of intensified military activity along the 740-km Line of Control (LoC), where recent violations by Pakistan have strained the 2021 ceasefire agreement. Recent border firing incidents have affected five districts—Baramulla, Kupwara, Poonch, Rajouri, and Jammu—heightening security apprehensions on both sides.
India and Pakistan had recently agreed to halt all military actions across land, air, and sea following intense exchanges of missiles and drones, averting a potential full-scale conflict. As the situation continues to unfold, officials remain vigilant, monitoring drone sightings and ensuring public safety remains a paramount concern.
