
Elon Musk’s Boring Company in Groundbreaking Talks with Government for Revolutionary Amtrak Project!
The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) is enlisting the expertise of the Boring Company, founded by Elon Musk, for a significant Amtrak infrastructure project. According to sources familiar with the discussions, FRA officials have engaged with Boring Company representatives to evaluate the budget and timeline for the Frederick Douglass Tunnel, intended to improve the bustling rail corridor between Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and Virginia. Initial estimates placed the project’s cost at $6 billion, but that figure has now surged to as high as $8.5 billion.
Conversations last month involved officials from the Department of Transportation (DOT), which oversees the FRA. During these talks, the Boring Company indicated it could deliver the tunnel at reduced costs and in a more efficient manner, as two sources disclosed. DOT spokesperson Nathaniel Sizemore confirmed that the Boring Company was among several candidates being considered for a new engineering contract, though he refrained from naming the other firms in consideration.
Concerns regarding Musk’s conflicts of interest have emerged, given his myriad business interests, which include Tesla and SpaceX, along with his role as a significant advisor to the Trump administration. Critics fear that Musk’s leadership over multiple ventures could compromise the integrity of the project. Notably, public scrutiny has arisen over occasions when Musk’s businesses have benefited from governmental attention, such as when President Trump promoted Tesla vehicles from the White House in March.
The Transportation Department noted the budget increase for the tunnel project, stressing that Amtrak has yet to identify cost-saving measures. “The department has had conversations with many stakeholders in the infrastructure-engineering space to understand opportunities to get this project back on track,” Sizemore stated. Amtrak has not issued immediate comments, and neither the Boring Company nor Musk has responded to requests for clarification.
The Frederick Douglass Tunnel aims to replace the aging Baltimore and Potomac Tunnel, a 152-year-old structure vital to Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor. This project marks Amtrak’s largest infrastructure initiative, with the inspector general’s office raising alarms about rising costs and delayed timelines. The tunnel is slated for completion by 2035. A joint venture led by Kiewit and J.F. Shea was selected last year for the construction work, but they have not provided updates.
Political criticisms have surfaced over federal funding allocation for this project, with figures like Republican Senator Ted Cruz and current Vice President JD Vance expressing concerns that it prioritizes Northeastern states over others. Musk himself has criticized Amtrak, advocating for the federal railroad to be privatized following a controversial statement in which he suggested that international visitors avoid using it.
The Boring Company, which has struggled to bring its projects to fruition, previously proposed concepts such as an in-ground hyperloop system along the Eastern Seaboard. However, many of these ideas have been sidelined, and earlier plans for a Baltimore-Washington vehicle loop have seemingly been abandoned. Leading the Boring Company, Steve Davis has worked closely with Musk and the Trump administration, promoting initiatives intended to streamline government functions while also being scrutinized for the company’s limited success.
As the FRA explores innovative partnerships and strategies for this tunnel project, questions about governance and accountability continue to linger, underscoring the complexities inherent in large-scale infrastructure endeavors.
