Scientists Discover Breakthrough Molecule to Halt Brain Cell Death in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s

A team of Australian scientists has made a groundbreaking discovery, identifying a small molecule that can block cell death, a finding that holds potential for new treatments for neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. Researchers from the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI) in Melbourne aimed to uncover new chemicals capable of halting cell death, which could revolutionize the future treatment of these debilitating conditions.

The study, which involved screening over 100,000 chemical compounds, led to the identification of a molecule that specifically targets a protein known as BAX. This protein is responsible for triggering cell death by damaging mitochondria, the cell’s powerhouses. By interfering with BAX, the researchers were able to effectively prevent cell death. “We were thrilled to find a small molecule that targets a killer protein called BAX and stops it from functioning,” stated Professor Guillaume Lessene from WEHI. He emphasized that in neurons, suppressing BAX alone might be enough to reduce cell death.

While therapies that induce cell death are transforming cancer treatment, finding cell death inhibitors for neurodegenerative diseases has been notably difficult. The newly identified molecule offers a promising avenue to explore potential therapies. “For the first time, we could keep BAX away from mitochondria and keep cells alive using this molecule,” said Kaiming Li, the lead author and a researcher at Dewson Lab. He added that this discovery could pave the way for next-generation cell death inhibitors aimed at combating degenerative conditions.

The study’s implications are significant, as it opens up a new path to potentially develop disease-modifying drugs for Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. The researchers believe that identifying drugs capable of blocking cell death may lead to much-needed advancements in treatment options for these neurodegenerative diseases.
