10-Year-Old Boy Found Dead in Guwahati Suitcase; Arrests Made
GUWAHATI: A tragic incident has shook Guwahati as a 10-year-old boy, Mrinmoy Barman, was found murdered on Sunday, May 11. His mutilated body was discovered stuffed inside a suitcase near the Forest Department office at Basistha. The shocking revelation has led to the arrest of Mrinmoy’s mother, Dipali Rajbongshi, and her partner, Jitumoni Haloi, following a coordinated operation by the Basistha and Dispur police.
The grim discovery was made by a local scrap collector who stumbled upon the black trolley bag on a desolate stretch between Basistha and Indira Nagar. Upon spotting human legs protruding from the partially unzipped suitcase, he immediately alerted the police.
A police team was dispatched to the scene and a thorough investigation ensued, identifying Mrinmoy as a Class V student at Navodaya Jatiya Vidyalaya through school records.
Dipali, a clinic worker, had previously reported her son missing, claiming he had not returned from tuition classes. However, contradictions in her statement raised suspicions, prompting further police interrogation. After extended questioning, both Dipali and Jitumoni confessed to the murder.
Police investigations indicated that the couple viewed Mrinmoy as an obstacle to their relationship. On the day of the incident, they lured the young boy from their Jayanagar home with chocolates and took him on a motorcycle to Basistha. The suitcase, believed to have been brought for the deliberate disposal of the body, was left at the scene, along with Mrinmoy’s schoolbag, lending credence to the prevailing theory.
Evidence suggests that the heinous crime was committed close to the dumping site, where forensic teams and CID officials later collected crucial evidence. The suspects were taken back to the scene for a reconstruction of events in the presence of a magistrate, where they reaffirmed their involvement in the crime.
Deputy Commissioner (East) Mrinal Deka confirmed the arrests, indicating that the victim’s body has been sent for a post-mortem examination. He noted that a forensic report is anticipated on Monday, which may shed more light on the circumstances surrounding the case. The Officer-in-Charge of Basistha Police Station stated that both Dipali and Jitumoni are currently in custody as investigations continue.
The accused initially filed a missing complaint at the Dispur Police Station as an apparent diversion, according to police sources.
Investigations into the motives and planning behind this shocking act are ongoing, as the horrific crime has reverberated throughout the city, coinciding with the celebration of Mother’s Day nationwide.
