Guwahati: Assam’s Basistha Police have arrested a woman and her lover in connection with the brutal murder of her son, whose dismembered remains were discovered in a trolley bag near the Forest Department office. The victim has been identified as 10-year-old Mrinmoy Barman, a fifth-grade student at Navodaya Jatiya Vidyalaya, who had been reported missing earlier.
After extensive questioning, authorities detained the child’s mother, Dipali Rajbongshi, and her partner, Jyotimoy Haloi. Sources within the police indicate that both have confessed to the murder. A local waste collector stumbled upon the disturbing scene while noticing a black trolley bag left by the roadside between Basistha and Indira Nagar, where human legs were visible from the partially unzipped bag. The area, which lacks adequate street lighting and surveillance despite several government buildings nearby, has a history of vulnerability to such crimes.
Initially, Dipali claimed that her son was missing and filed a police report. However, inconsistencies in her statements during interrogation raised suspicions. Investigators later uncovered that she had sought a divorce from her husband, Bikash Barman, just two months prior and was involved with Haloi, a temporary peon at the Accountant General’s office.
Alongside the remains, police recovered the child’s schoolbag at the scene. Law enforcement officials took both suspects back to the location to reconstruct the events leading to the crime. A magistrate later examined the area and the remains. Currently, Dipali is being held at Basistha Police Station while investigators are conducting forensic tests on the remains to confirm the child’s identity.
This shocking crime has triggered widespread community outrage, with local residents demanding that authorities enhance security measures and install improved surveillance systems in poorly lit and neglected parts of the city, which they believe have become hotspots for violent crime.
