Sikkim’s Railway Breakthrough: Final Location Approved for New Melli-Dentam Line
Guwahati, May 11 (PTI) The Railway Ministry has approved the final location survey for a new railway line in Sikkim, connecting Melli to Dentam through Jorethang and Legship, according to an official statement. The Northeast Frontier Railway will conduct the survey, which has been budgeted at Rs 2.25 crore.
This development signifies a significant advancement in enhancing rail connectivity in southern and western Sikkim. The proposed route aims to fill a crucial infrastructure gap by linking remote towns such as Dentam, situated near the India-Nepal border at Chiwabhanjyang, with the national railway network. The new line is projected to be approximately 75 km long, based on the initial feasibility survey, and is planned as a strategic extension of the Sivok-Rangpo railway line, which is anticipated to commence operations by 2027.
Melli, an important entry point to the southern and western parts of Sikkim, is expected to serve as a junction for this proposed extension, facilitating seamless integration into the national transportation infrastructure. The upcoming final location survey will yield essential technical and feasibility insights needed to determine the final alignment, engineering design, and cost estimation for the project.
This railway connectivity initiative is expected to act as a catalyst for economic growth in the region, particularly in Gyalshing and its surrounding areas. By improving access, promoting tourism, enhancing trade, and fostering employment opportunities, this project is poised to transform the local economy, as noted in the statement released on Saturday. Furthermore, tenders related to the execution of this survey are expected to be issued soon. PTI SSG SSG SOM
