Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested on Friday by federal authorities for allegedly trespassing at the Delaney Hall U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center in Elizabeth, New Jersey. The incident unfolded during a protest where Baraka was demanding access to the facility alongside demonstrators and members of the state’s congressional delegation.
According to interim U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Alina Habba, Baraka was taken into custody after ignoring multiple warnings from Department of Homeland Security officials to leave the area. “He has willingly chosen to disregard the law,” Habba stated on social media, emphasizing that such actions would not be tolerated. However, Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin characterized the incident as a “bizarre political stunt,” claiming that the group had attempted to force entry into the detention center. She indicated that had proper procedures been followed, a tour could have been arranged. Watson Coleman strongly refuted this characterization, expressing frustration over the misinformation and defending the delegation’s actions.
Baraka’s arrest has drawn swift backlash from elected officials and advocacy groups alike. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy expressed his outrage, demanding Baraka’s immediate release. Moreover, Murad Awawdeh, president of the New York Immigration Coalition, denounced the arrest as “reckless and irresponsible,” calling for accountability for those involved in the decision.
