India Surpasses Germany: A Historic Leap to Become the World’s Third-Largest Producer of Renewable Energy

India has emerged as the world’s third-largest producer of wind and solar energy, overtaking Germany, according to Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi. As of April this year, the country’s solar power installed capacity surged to 107.95 GW, a remarkable increase from 82.64 GW in the same month last year, marking a substantial growth of 30.7 percent. With a 10 percent share of the global clean energy market, India’s renewable energy capacity has been on a significant upward trajectory under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Joshi emphasized that this achievement brings the nation “a step closer to a sustainable future.”

Additionally, wind energy capacity reached 51.06 GW last month, up from 46.16 GW in April 2024, representing a growth of 10.6 percent. The total renewable energy capacity, excluding fossil fuels, has now hit 231.81 GW in April, compared to 199.86 GW in April 2024, achieving a notable 16 percent annual growth. India is leading the charge in the global energy transition, having increased solar power production more than 30 times over the past decade. Notably, the nation met its 2030 renewable energy target of 200 GW in 2022, a full eight years ahead of schedule.

Last month, Joshi inaugurated the PV Module Testing and Calibration Lab at the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) in Gwal Pahari, Haryana, just outside the national capital. He described the facility as a significant step for India, stressing that it will help ensure that domestically produced large solar modules meet the highest quality standards as production scales up. The solar module manufacturing capacity has risen dramatically from 2 GW in 2014 to 80 GW today, with an ambitious goal of reaching 150 GW by 2030.

In parallel to advancements in solar energy, Joshi underscored the milestone of achieving 50 GW in wind energy capacity. He reiterated the government’s ambitious objective, stating that India is on track to secure a staggering 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy by 2030, which includes a target of 292 GW from solar sources, as envisioned by the Prime Minister.
