Manipur Police’s Bold Action Dismantles Extortion Ring: Five Arrested in Major Crackdown
Manipur police, collaborating with security forces, have ramped up intelligence-driven combing operations and cordon-and-search initiatives across the state in a bid to combat extortion and related criminal activities. In a concerted effort over the last two days, authorities successfully apprehended five militants associated with banned insurgent groups in various districts.
On May 6, two active members of the KYKL (SOREPA) group were captured in Imphal East District. Yumkhaibam Nanao Singh, 27, from Andro Kharam Leikai, and Chingakham Norenkumar Singh, 28, from Andro Sanapat, were arrested at Andro Khuman Hill. Both suspects were found with mobile phones and are currently undergoing interrogation. In addition, authorities detained Khangembam Joyson Meitei, an active operative of the banned KCP (Apunba) group, from Khongman Khagembam Leirak. Joyson, 28, is alleged to have extorted money from educational institutions in the Imphal area, and police seized a mobile phone and a two-wheeler from his possession during the operation.
In Thoubal District, a significant arrest was made involving Laishram Basanta Singh, 53, a member of the RPF/PLA. He was taken into custody at Yairipok Bazar, where police recovered a mobile phone equipped with two SIM cards. The swift police actions reflect a broader strategy to eliminate criminal elements threatening public safety.
Earlier, on May 5, another operation led to the arrest of Elangbam Jogen Singh, 43, of Hiyanglam Mayai Leikai, a cadre of the KCP (PWG). Captured at Wabagai Lamkhai Bazar in Kakching District, Jogen was found with a mobile phone, two SIM cards, and an Aadhaar card.
In a separate initiative, the Manipur Police Traffic Control Wing seized an Alto 800 LXI car near the Airport Gate along Tiddim Road on May 6. The vehicle had been flagged as "Not to Be Transacted" by the Public Vehicles Department in Kolkata due to its affiliation with an anti-motor theft case. The driver was arrested, and the vehicle was subsequently impounded.
Traffic enforcement efforts from January to April 2025 have yielded substantial results, with e-challans worth ₹1.74 crore issued for various violations. Notably, on May 5 alone, authorities recovered 16 stolen vehicles and removed tinted glasses from 69 other vehicles during a special drive.
Officials have reiterated their determination to continue operations aimed at dismantling extortion networks and enhancing law and order throughout the state. These proactive measures not only reflect the commitment to safeguarding public safety but also aim to restore peace and security in the region as authorities intensify their fight against organized crime.
