Strengthening Security: Arunachal Governor Advocates for Border Fencing and Robust ILP to Combat Infiltration
Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen (Retd) K T Parnaik has emphasized the critical importance of a strengthened border fencing system and an enhanced Inner Line Permit (ILP) regime. Addressing national security and the preservation of indigenous rights, Parnaik made his remarks during a high-level security review meeting at Raj Bhavan. He highlighted that Arunachal Pradesh’s unique geopolitical positioning necessitates robust border infrastructure, aimed specifically at curtailing infiltration, arms smuggling, narcotics trafficking, and insurgent activities.
“A secure border with clearly defined crossing points will not only delineate territorial boundaries but also foster a stable environment conducive to socio-economic development in the region,” Parnaik stated, as communicated by Raj Bhavan. This remark underscores the dual focus on security and development, which are crucial for the frontier areas of the state.
The Governor also advocated for a comprehensive overhaul of the ILP system, considering it an essential legal framework for managing the entry of non-residents. He argued that a well-structured ILP is vital for maintaining a demographic equilibrium and safeguarding the cultural heritage of Arunachal’s indigenous tribes. “The ILP mechanism is not just about preserving traditions; it is also about ensuring internal security, enhancing visitor monitoring, and supporting law enforcement,” Parnaik explained.
During the meeting, officials including Home Minister Mama Natung, Additional Director General of Police Vivek Kishore, and Inspector General of Police (Law & Order) Chukhu Apa provided insights into the state’s security landscape. They discussed ongoing challenges and progress, particularly focusing on fencing initiatives along the India-Myanmar border. This dialogue is essential for formulating effective strategies to counter various security threats.
Governor Parnaik commended the state police for their dedication and proactive measures in maintaining peace and fostering inclusive development in Arunachal Pradesh. He emphasized the need for sustained vigilance and innovative policing to ensure long-term stability in the region, which is increasingly pivotal to national security.
As the state grapples with various security challenges, the Governor’s call for improved infrastructure and regulatory frameworks reflects a broader vision for Arunachal Pradesh. By aligning national security imperatives with the protection of indigenous rights, these initiatives aim to not only secure its borders but also promote socio-economic vitality in an area marked by rich cultural diversity.
This strategic approach underlines the importance of collaboration between security forces and local communities, ensuring that measures for protection do not compromise the rights and identities of the indigenous population. With these initiatives, Arunachal Pradesh is positioned to navigate complex geopolitical dynamics while fostering a stable, secure environment for its citizens.
