A fake doctor who allegedly practiced medicine in Dimapur, Nagaland, for several years has been arrested following a complaint from the Nagaland Medical Council. Albert P. Lotha, a resident of NST Colony, was apprehended after police inquiries confirmed that he had been impersonating a medical professional without the necessary qualifications or registration.

Dimapur’s Commissioner of Police, Kevithuto Sophie, revealed in a press conference that Lotha was treating patients at a local pharmacy, Medical Hall, situated in New Market. The apprehension stemmed from a complaint stating that Lotha was practicing without the compulsory registration mandated by the Medical Council Act, 2014. The act requires all practicing doctors to be registered with the relevant medical council to ensure public safety.

During the investigation, Lotha claimed to have obtained an MBBS degree from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences in Bengaluru in 2014. However, inquiries with the university indicated that while he had enrolled in 2008, he did not complete even one year of the program. Sophie noted that Lotha had cleverly ingratiated himself with actual medical professionals, which enabled him to operate for an extended period without detection.

Authorities are continuing their investigation to assess the full extent of Lotha’s deception and the potential harm caused to patients who unwittingly sought his medical advice. A legal case has been opened against him under the relevant laws, prompting police to issue a public warning.

Sophie urged the community to be vigilant when seeking medical care, emphasizing the importance of verifying the qualifications and credentials of healthcare providers. He reiterated the need for public involvement in maintaining safety in the healthcare sector, encouraging individuals to report anyone suspected of practicing medicine without valid credentials.

As the investigation unfolds, the police are committed to ensuring that fraudulent activities in the medical field do not jeopardize the health of unsuspecting patients. By fostering a culture of scrutiny and awareness, the Dimapur Police aim to create a safer environment for all residents seeking medical assistance.

This case underscores a critical challenge in the healthcare system, as the public must remain alert to protect themselves from unqualified practitioners. The police’s proactive stance highlights the necessity for community cooperation in reporting suspicious activities, reinforcing that a collective effort is vital in safeguarding public health.

The situation serves as a powerful reminder of the need for stringent verification processes and the responsibility of both medical professionals and patients to uphold the integrity of healthcare practices in Nagaland and beyond.
