Intense Sectarian Clashes Erupt Near Syria’s Capital, Engulfing Region and Sparking Israeli Involvement
Israel conducted airstrikes on Syria on Wednesday, following skirmishes involving the Druse minority. This development marks Israel’s intervention in a growing sectarian conflict. The Israeli military announced that its aircraft targeted operatives south of Damascus, accusing them of attacking Druse civilians. While the operatives were not identified, the Israeli government has indicated that these individuals were part of an unnamed extremist group operating in the region.
The escalation occurs amid violent clashes near Damascus between pro-government forces and Druse militias from Ashrafieh Sahnaya, a primarily Druse area. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based war monitoring group, at least 39 individuals have perished over two days of fighting. The violence began after a controversial audio clip circulated on social media, falsely attributed to a Druse cleric criticizing the Prophet Muhammad. Despite denials from the cleric and a statement from Syria’s Interior Ministry exonerating him, the conflicts have intensified.
This unrest raises concerns among Syria’s diverse ethnic and religious communities, as many fear potential persecution under Syria’s new Islamist leadership, which took power after overthrowing Bashar al-Assad in December. The conflict initially erupted in Jaramana, a predominantly Druse city, resulting in 17 deaths by Tuesday. By early Wednesday, the violence had extended to Ashrafieh Sahnaya, where Druse militia confronted government and proxy forces, the Observatory reported.
Meanwhile, the Syrian state news agency, SANA, described the attackers in Ashrafieh Sahnaya as armed gunmen without identifying them explicitly as Druse fighters. A representative from the Syrian Interior Ministry described these gunmen as “criminals” and promised a firm government response.
Israel, home to a significant Druse community, has pledged protection for Druse individuals in Syria. Despite these promises, many Syrian Druse have declined Israel’s offer, wary of further entanglement. The Israeli airstrikes on Wednesday were intended as a warning to an extremist group suspected of planning attacks on Druse civilians, according to a joint statement by Israel’s prime minister’s office and its defense minister.
Since the ousting of Assad, Israel has conducted numerous operations in Syria, targeting military outposts and preventing weapons from reaching hostile groups close to its borders. The new Syrian government, led by Sunni Islamist rebels previously linked to Al Qaeda, faces the challenge of integrating a complex landscape of armed factions. Prominent Druse militias are currently negotiating terms to join the national military.
The frequent outbreaks of sectarian violence since Assad’s departure have fueled fears of marginalization among minorities. Last month, sectarian violence erupted along Syria’s coast, a region predominantly inhabited by Alawites, the sect of the Assad family. As the country grapples with its new political reality, tensions remain high, with uncertainties looming over the future of its diverse communities.
