Devastating Blockade: 225 Vehicles Stranded as MZP Halts National Highway Access

Guwahati: Transportation and daily life in Mizoram are facing significant disruptions as members of the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), a major student organization, have initiated indefinite blockades on the Aizawl-Thenzawl-Lunglei (ATL) Road and National Highway 54(A), which connects Lunglei to Lawngtlai. This protest, now entering its third day, has left at least 225 vehicles stranded, including crucial trucks carrying essential supplies and ambulances.

Jerome Lalmuankima Hmar, the Superintendent of Police in Lunglei district, confirmed that the blockades at Pukpui and Zobawk villages have effectively isolated Lunglei from Lawngtlai. The unrest stems from claims that the state government has diverted Rs 44 crore, half of the Rs 90 crore designated for the upkeep of the ATL Road, sparking outrage among residents and activists.

The Lunglei unit of MZP is calling for the immediate reinstatement of the diverted funds and the fulfillment of the government’s promise to repair the deteriorating ATL Road. In response to the ongoing agitation, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma assured citizens that additional funds would be allocated to address the pressing issue. He stated that the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) is currently evaluating the ATL Road to ensure long-term maintenance solutions.

Despite the government’s assurances, MZP leaders are demanding accountability regarding the allegedly diverted funds. Lalpeksanga Chenkual, an advisor to the Lunglei MZP, expressed skepticism about the government’s ability to fulfill its promise, noting the significant diversion of funds. “We demand that someone restore the diverted funds, and above all, the Zoram People’s Movement government should deliver on its poll promise to repair the ATL Road,” he asserted.

The protest has seen demonstrators displaying placards with the Chief Minister’s mobile number, encouraging those in need to reach out directly. The blockades have created severe hardship for many, particularly for patients requiring urgent medical attention and commuters stranded in the situation. Supplies of food, drinking water, and fuel are dwindling for those impacted, adding to the urgency of the situation.

SP Hmar has encouraged those affected by the blockade to reach out to the District Magistrates to voice their complaints; he remains hopeful for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing crisis. Meanwhile, local members of the Sekhum branch of the Young Mizo Association (YMA) are stepping in by providing humanitarian assistance, distributing free meals to stranded truckers and commuters.

As tensions continue to rise, the future of transportation in Mizoram hangs in the balance, with the MZP determined to see their demands met and the state government navigating a complex situation that impacts the daily lives of many residents.

In summary, this situation highlights the ongoing struggle for infrastructure and accountability in Mizoram, emphasizing the need for effective governance and community support in times of crisis. The outcome of this protest will likely resonate beyond local borders, affecting perceptions of governance and public trust in the region.
