Celebrate Bhupen Uzir: Guwahati’s Soulful Music Tribute on His 72nd Birth Anniversary
Guwahati was recently abuzz with a vibrant cultural event celebrating the 72nd birth anniversary of the revered late music director and sound recordist, Bhupen Uzir. This significant observance took place at the Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra, a prominent cultural hub in Guwahati, infusing the night with musical enchantment and collective admiration for Uzir’s enduring legacy in Assamese music. Organized by the Bhupen Uzir Smriti Raksha Samiti in collaboration with the Assam government’s Directorate of Cultural Affairs, the event aptly named “Hiya Bhora Xubhokamonare” (With a Heartful of Good Wishes) drew an eclectic mix of artists and music aficionados, all united by their affection for Uzir’s timeless works.
During this melodious evening, the prestigious Bhupen Uzir Suwaroni Shilpo Sadhana Award was conferred upon four outstanding individuals in recognition of their substantial contributions to instrumental music and sound recording in Assam. The awardees included guitarist Sourabh Kumar Das, violinist and guitarist Dilip Rasaily, saxophonist Pitambar Tamuly, and recordist Satish Chauhan. Their recognition highlighted the continuing influence of Uzir’s passion and artistry within the musical landscape.
Adding a competitive flair to the celebration, winners of an online competition showcasing interpretations of Uzir’s pieces were also honored. In the under-14 ‘A’ category, Jigyasa Kashyap achieved first place, followed by Pragya Konwar and Shruti Madhujya. Meanwhile, in the ‘B’ category for participants over 14 years old, Taneesha Saikia emerged victorious, with Ratan Konwar and Junak Nibir Kashyap claiming second and third positions, respectively. Each winner was awarded a cash prize, certificate, and trophy, acknowledging their creative engagement with Uzir’s music.
The evening kicked off with a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony, graced by distinguished figures including Noni Devi, Ramen Choudhury, Samar Hazarika, Anupam Choudhury, and Manisha Hazarika, setting a respectful tone for the proceedings. The audience, composed of celebrities, music enthusiasts, and Uzir’s childhood friends such as Bijoy Bordoloi, Bijoy Das, Prakash Baruah, and Pratap Goswami, shared in the celebration of Uzir’s legacy. Esteemed artists like Syed Sadulla, Sandhya Menon, Manisha Hazarika, Pulok Banerjee, Malabika Bora, Diganta Bharati, Manash Hazarika, and actors Pranjal Saikia and Kapil Bora were also present, enhancing the event’s star-studded allure.
Attendees were treated to captivating performances of Bhupen Uzir’s beloved songs by a lineup of talented vocalists, including Shashwati Phukan, Queen Hazarika, Mausumi Saharia, and many more, who breathed life into Uzir’s compositions. A poignant highlight was the debut of a new song, ‘Smritir Avesh’ (The Feeling of Memory), featuring Shanta Uzir’s vocals, penned by Manjula Hazarika and set to music by Sourav Mahanta, which added depth and nostalgia to the event.
The commemorative night concluded on a high note with a collaborative instrumental performance by revered musicians such as Jayanta Gogoi, Dr. Mrinal Das, Tapan Das, and Deep Rajbangshi, offering a befitting tribute to Bhupen Uzir’s indelible impact on the Assamese cultural scene. This celebration not only honored Uzir’s remarkable contributions but also underscored the unity and vibrant spirit of Assam’s artistic community.
