A devastating missile attack struck the city center of Sumy in northeastern Ukraine on Sunday morning, killing at least 34 individuals in what appears to be the deadliest assault on civilians by Russian forces this year. Ukrainian authorities reported that two ballistic missiles targeted the bustling city amid a Christian Palm Sunday celebration, turning a lively area into a scene of horror marked by wrecked vehicles and debris-strewn streets.
The attack resulted in more than 117 individuals injured, including two children. The Interior Minister, Ihor Klymenko, lamented the tragedy on social media, emphasizing the indiscriminate nature of the assault: “People were harmed right in the middle of the street — in cars, on public transport, in their homes.” Eyewitness Volodymyr Boiko, a 69-year-old resident, described the aftermath as a “horror movie,” recounting the chilling sight of mutilated bodies following his survival from the rear of a bus hit by one of the missiles.
This latest tragedy comes after a previous missile strike in Kryvyi Rih, where 19 lives, including those of nine children, were similarly lost. Both incidents involved ballistic missiles, which travel at high speeds, rendering them difficult to intercept.
Since U.S.-mediated cease-fire discussions began in March, civilian casualties have escalated. The United Nations reported a significant spike in fatalities last month, with 164 civilians killed—marking a sharp increase from previous months and indicating ongoing Russian aggression despite international peace efforts.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky conveyed his frustration at what he perceives as Russia’s disregard for cease-fire initiatives. “A strong reaction from the world is needed,” Zelensky urged on Telegram, calling for global condemnation and action beyond the diplomatic efforts of the Trump administration.
Although Ukraine and Russia had committed to cease attacks on certain energy and Black Sea infrastructure, no full cease-fire agreement has been implemented. Sumy, pounded by regular attacks, now embodies the despair and resilience of Ukraine amid the war. Before the conflict, it was a city of 250,000, and has since become a haven for those escaping peripheral clashes near the Russian border.
Local resident Valeria Voronenko described the catastrophic aftermath as the worst tragedy the city has faced in three years of conflict, expressing the overwhelming chaos and distress amidst the crowd. Another resident, volunteer Serhii Skliarenko, questioned the feasibility of peaceful negotiations. “The kind of peace that Trump is talking about… it’s unthinkable,” he declared, urging broader recognition of the grim realities on the ground.
