Assam Empowers Small Tea Growers via Farmers’ Registry Portal
Small tea growers in Assam can now register on the Farmers’ Registry Portal and receive Farmer IDs, giving them access to government welfare schemes, agricultural services and institutional credit through a single digital platform, the state government announced. The move brings tea and plantation-class land holdings into the registry, allowing growers to be recognised and supported under agricultural programmes while the tea sector itself remains administratively with the Industry Department.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the inclusion of tea holdings in the portal was important for the community, calling it “a significant step for the State’s tea-growing community.” He said Farmer IDs will help ensure timely access to fertilisers, government schemes, institutional credit and other agricultural services, and would reduce the role of middlemen in the sector.
The Agriculture Department will now be able to extend its benefits to registered small tea growers, even as policy for the tea industry continues to be handled by the Industry Department. Agriculture Minister Pijush Hazarika said the decision will benefit Assam’s small tea growers, who now account for almost half of the state’s tea output, and stressed that the government will work to register all eligible growers on the digital platform. He said the focus is “to ensure that all eligible small tea growers are integrated into the digital platform.”
According to Tea Board India, Assam had 1,33,864 small tea growers cultivating 1,26,107.64 hectares of tea plantations as of March 31, 2025. Officials say the registry and Farmer IDs are intended to streamline support, improve access to services and credit, and strengthen income security for smallholders across the state.
