NEHU Community Unites Behind New Interim Leadership, Fostering Trust and Hope for North Eastern Hills University
North-Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association and Non-Teaching Staff Association Unite in Support of Acting Vice Chancellor Professor Sherwin Sungoh
In a show of solidarity, the North-Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) and the North-Eastern Hill University Non-Teaching Staff Association (NEHUNSA) gathered outside the Vice Chancellor’s office to demonstrate their strong support for Professor Sherwin Sungoh, who has taken on the role of Acting Vice Chancellor (VC) of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Shillong, Meghalaya. The meeting, convened on Friday, aimed to reaffirm their backing for Prof. Sungoh’s decision to assume the position, as directed by the Ministry of Education.
Professor Lakhon Kma, President of NEHUTA, stressed that both faculty and non-teaching staff associations are fully behind Prof. Sungoh’s appointment, citing Statute 2(A)(5)(i) of the University, which mandates the senior-most professor to assume the role in the absence of a regular Vice Chancellor. According to Prof. Lakhon, Prof. Sungoh’s authority as Acting Vice Chancellor is limited to convening crucial university bodies such as the Executive Council, Academic Council, and Finance Committee, while she cannot make permanent appointments. However, she has the power to make temporary appointments and nominate a Pro Vice Chancellor, as well as perform all functions of a regular Vice Chancellor.
This development follows Prof. Sungoh’s resignation as Pro Vice Chancellor of the Shillong Campus on Wednesday, where she relinquished her position through an email to DK Himanshu, Under Secretary to the Ministry of Education. In the email, she assumed the role of Vice Chancellor-in-charge with immediate effect, citing her “adequate administrative and financial authority”. The united front from NEHUTA and NEHUNSA sends a clear message of stability and cooperation as Prof. Sungoh takes the reins at NEHU.
Professor Lakhon further clarified the scope of Prof. Sungoh’s authority, stating that although she may not be able to make permanent appointments, she has the necessary administrative and financial autonomy to guide the university during this interim period. The joint support from both associations signifies a shift towards a collaborative environment, ensuring a smoother transition for the university.
The appointment of Prof. Sungoh as Acting Vice Chancellor has been met with widespread approval, with NEHUTA and NEHUNSA extending their full backing to her decision. As the university navigates this period of leadership change, this collective show of support serves as a beacon of stability and a vote of confidence in Prof. Sungoh’s abilities to steer the institution towards continued growth and development.
The development has significant implications for NEHU, with Prof. Sungoh’s leadership set to have a profound impact on the university’s future. As the Acting Vice Chancellor, she will be responsible for overseeing crucial university bodies and guiding the institution through any challenges it may face. With the support of both faculty and non-teaching staff associations, Prof. Sungoh is poised to expertly assume the responsibilities of the Acting Vice Chancellor, ensuring a prosperous future for NEHU.
