NEIGRIHMS Team Achieves Global Acclaim, Sweeps Top Ophthalmology Award at Prestigious International Conference
A team of researchers from the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) in Shillong has made a significant breakthrough in the field of ophthalmology. Led by Prof (Dr) Tanie Natung, the team has received the prestigious “Best of Indian Journal of Ophthalmology Award” at the 40th Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) Congress in New Delhi.
The award was given for the team’s research paper, “Comparison of Hill-RBF 3.0 with Barrett Universal II, SRK/T, Hoffer Q, Haigis, and Holladay 1 to predict the accuracy of post-cataract surgery refractive outcomes in Indian eyes.” The study analyzed six intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation formulas to determine which one offered the highest accuracy in predicting post-surgery refractive outcomes, specifically in Indian patients. The research was conducted by Prof Natung, along with Dr Ishita Pandey, Dr Benjamin Nongrum, and Dr Ester Sekhose.
The team’s findings are expected to serve as a practical guide for ophthalmologists worldwide, aiming to improve visual outcomes following cataract surgeries. “This study is crucial because it addresses a critical issue in ophthalmology – achieving accurate refractive outcomes in post-cataract surgery patients, especially in countries with diverse population characteristics like India,” said Prof Natung.
The conference, held from April 3 to 6, 2025, drew participation from around 13,500 delegates globally, making it one of the largest gatherings in the field of ophthalmology. The All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS), which hosted the event, has nearly 27,000 members, making it India’s largest medical specialty association. The Indian Journal of Ophthalmology, which recognized the NEIGRIHMS team, is a highly respected publication with wide national and international readership.
Prof Natung, a renowned ophthalmologist, hails from Lumdung village in the Papu Valley of East Kameng district, Arunachal Pradesh. Despite hailing from a remote region, Prof Natung has made significant contributions to ophthalmic research and medical education. The award is a testament to her team’s dedication to advancing the field of ophthalmology and improving patient care.
The study’s findings are expected to have a significant impact on the field of ophthalmology, particularly in India where cataract surgeries are a common procedure. The research will help ophthalmologists choose the most accurate IOL power calculation formula for their patients, leading to improved visual outcomes and enhanced patient satisfaction. As the global ophthalmology community continues to evolve, the NEIGRIHMS team’s research and findings will serve as a valuable resource for practitioners and researchers alike.
