Heartwarming Victory: Surrendered Naxalites and Affected Families Embrace New Hope with First-Time PMAY Benefits in Chhattisgarh
In a significant development from Chhattisgarh’s Balrampur district, individuals affected by Naxal-related violence, along with those who have surrendered from Naxalite organizations, are now benefiting from the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). This initiative marks a pivotal step in integrating former insurgents and victims into mainstream society. District Panchayat Balrampur’s Chief Executive Officer, Nayantara Singh Tomar, confirmed on Friday that under a dedicated segment of the program, the scheme’s advantages are being extended to those impacted by Naxalite incidents or who have renounced militancy.
Tomar disclosed that a list comprising 77 individuals was vetted, out of which 30 were deemed eligible for the housing scheme, with 23 already receiving approval for new homes. The remaining seven candidates will be accommodated after technical issues are rectified, underscoring the administration’s commitment to resolving logistical hurdles efficiently.
One of the recipients, former Naxalite Sitaram Sonwani, recounted his journey, describing how he joined a Naxalite group in 1999 but was convinced by his wife to abandon the violence. After years spent in Assam, Sonwani surrendered and was incarcerated for 14 months due to earlier transgressions. “Now, my family lives happily in the home provided by the PMAY. I thank the government for this,” Sonwani expressed.
This initiative aligns with recent statements from Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who, on March 30, announced that 50 Naxalites had surrendered in Bijapur district, signifying a shift towards peace and integration. In a social media post, Shah emphasized the importance of leaving violence behind, endorsing a policy by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which encourages militants to adopt peaceful measures for rehabilitation and integration into society.
The positive developments come amid ongoing anti-Maoist activities led by security forces. On March 31, a coordinated team uncovered the body of a female Naxalite from an engagement site in Dantewada, Chhattisgarh. The deceased individual had a bounty of ₹25 lakh and was discovered alongside an INSAS rifle, ammunition, and supplies. This operation was conducted in the regions surrounding the Geedam and Bhairamgarh police stations, reiterating the government’s resolve to curb Naxalite insurgency through strategic interventions.
These efforts represent a broader strategy to dismantle the influence of Naxalite factions, while simultaneously providing a path for former militants to rejoin civilian life, promoting stability in affected areas.
